Favourite swimming pool at the end of our hike
The objective of our walk was to recover a water bottle we had lost on the ‘Rabbit Ears’ hike a couple of days previously when Mike jumped a stream crossing. We had thought we would do a short hike and get back in time to prep curries for a dinner party the following evening. However, a trail to the high contour path had Jacqui’s name on it and we couldn’t resist exploring.
Starting from the gate we followed an old logging trail up to the high contour path (this ascent not fit for cycling). Came across a small stream where we could wet our hats and scarves. Decided to go clockwise after Jacqui persuaded Mike it was only another 10km to circumnavigate the outcrop. Got it slightly wrong!
Although primarily for MTB, this is an excellent hiking trail. Where the MTB trail descended we started to ascend via some hairpins. Got to the side of a Bluegum plantation and made our own trail directly up the slope for about 300m (distance). Note the trail has since been improved and you dont need to climb straight upwards, just continue along logging trail until there is a very distinct path leading up more steeply. Rejoined path to continue circuit round the outcrop. Stunning views across Franschhoek Valley to Mt Rochelle Reserve. Had some early blackberries and Mike spotted a large buck.
On reaching the saddle we had a large number of potential paths down (some suitable for MTB). Lovely hike down with a cooling swim in a large pool in the Berg River, which was surprisingly warm. We also recovered the water bottle and ended the day with a wine tasting at Moresons.
